Celebrities Who Have Publicly Battled Breast Cancer

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The best way to beat the disease? Early detection. October 1st kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which aims to raise awareness and funds for research, so we’re shining a light on some of our favorite celebs who have battled the disease.

‘Sex and the City’ star Cynthia Nixon and singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow were each diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. Both ladies were in their mid 40s. Christina Applegate learned she had breast cancer in 2008 at just 36 years old. ‘Grease’ star Olivia Newton John battled breast cancer in the early 90’s. She underwent a partial mastectomy and has been cancer-free over two decades.

‘Good Morning America’s’ Robin Roberts caught her breast cancer in the early stages back in she returned to the anchor desk after undergoing chemotherapy, while NBC’s Today Show Co-Host Hoda Kotb allowed actual Today Show cameras to document her cancer treatment in 2007.

TV actress Maura Tierney known for roles on ‘ER’ and ‘The Affair’ is currently in remission after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 at age 42.

In 2012, actress Kathy Bates took to Twitter to reveal she’d dropped off the Hollywood scene because she was recovering from a double mastectomy.

And at the end of 2013, Angelina Jolie inspired countless women when she shared with the world that she underwent a preventative double mastectomy after finding out that she carries the BRCA gene mutation.
