SpinTel has been slinging the internet to Australians since 1996 and prides itself on offering simple, cost-effective plans.

SpinTel offers NBN plans on NBN 25, NBN 50, and NBN 100 speed tiers, all of which are contract-free. The telco’s plans are also free from setup fees, but you can bundle in a new modem, if you’re after one.

SpinTel mobile plans are powered by the Optus network.

On top of NBN plans, SpinTel also offers mobile broadband and 4G home wireless broadband and is one of the first smaller providers to start offering 5G home wireless broadband.

Tangerine Telecom may be a relative unknown in the wider world of internet plans, but it’s always been a favourite with WhistleOut users thanks to its near-unbeatable plan pricing.

Tangerine only sells NBN plans, all of which are value-focused. This means there’s not much in the way of extras, but all plans are no-contract with no set-up fees which gives you a lot of flexibility.

While customers can jump ship any time they like, they don’t seem likely to do so. If you check the customer ratings on Product Review, you’ll find they’re mostly five stars.

Superloop is one of the newer kids on the block when it comes to NBN. While it’s easy to think of Superloop as just another internet provider, it stands out from the NBN crowd thanks to its own robust infrastructure.

It’s one of the few telcos with a physical connection to every NBN Point of Interconnect, and it owns a whole lot of subsea cable capacity and domestic fibre, something that other providers often have to rent. Essentially, Superloop has far greater control over its network than most providers, which helps with faster speeds as well as troubleshooting.

Dodo has always had a name for itself in Australia as the bargain basement of internet plans, now offering NBN.

Prices get even better if you’re willing to bundle your electricity and gas with your internet connection – doing so will take $10 off your monthly plan on any speed tier. But there are some caveats: you need to take up an unlimited data plan and have all your utilities at the same address. And unfortunately, the offer is only available to Victoria and NSW residents.

Optus is probably the second-best known Australian internet provider next to Telstra, and it has taken years to build this reputation. The company originally launched as AUSSAT in 1981 but became the Optus we know in 2001.

Like Telstra, Optus offers a full range of services, like NBN, wireless broadband, and mobile broadband, and supports these with an army of staff manning its phones, stores, chat services and social media.

While Optus is perhaps best known for its mobile phone and traditional fixed-line internet plans, the telco also offers 4G and 5G home wireless internet, which are great alternatives for those with underperforming NBN.
